Walking Distances

Trying to get my head around distances on the OS map. Just for my reference, what sort of walking distances are we talking about if you go across the middle expanse of Dartmoor. Say from like Burrator Reservoir to Venford Reservoir, or somewhere like. What sort of a walk is that?

From the middle of Burrator reservoir to the centre of Venford Reservoir ( as the crow flies) is roughly 13km (8 miles). You would have to add on quite a bit if you were walking it, especially in the winter.

Rule of thumb for using the OS map and calculating the distance and times required...

For every kilometer 15 minutes for every contour climbed ADD 2 minutes
That way you will get a good guage on the time it will take plus add time for every box you find - 2 minutes per person.

Allow for break times as well

Hey Nik it's a good job you don't letterbox with us your estimation is very optimistic. When we walk normally we travel approx two and a quarter miles an hour ( not too bad with 2 kids and a blind dog)plus as you say approx 2 mins per contour but when we are out letterboxing we seem to travel at about one mile an hour if you include the time taken looking for the boxes. I am not sure whether it is the fact we spend to much time walking back and forth due to my lack of ability getting the bearings to meet or we spend a long time stamping up. But we definately spend more than 2 mins each at the boxes.
