Travellers

Hi everyone,
I've finally had a personal stamp made (only took me about 20 years!), and I am now thinking of creating a travelling letterbox which I can carry around with me when I'm on the moor. We live too far from Dartmoor to maintain a 'normal' box, so this seems a better solution. Obviously I need to design a separate stamp and get it made. Presumably I should also have a small notebook for people to stamp with their personal stamps. Is there anything else I should consider?

Also, are there any etiquette considerations with travelling boxes? Do I need to check for a unique name? (I don't currently have the catalogue of travelling boxes.) Is it considered polite to offer the stamp to boxers, or to wait for them to ask whether I have a traveller?

Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy,

Welcome to the forum.

Good questions about a travelling stamp ...
Firstly, you do not need to worry about having a unique name for your stamp. There are already many boxes that share the same name. But if you register it then you will be given a catalogue number specific to you.
As for a visitors book, that is down to personal choice. It depends on whether you wish to collect fellow boxers' personal stamps in a book or not.
There is no real etiquette regarding travellers as such. Sometimes they are offered (which I find very nice), but sometimes you get asked. All I would say is that letterboxers who carry a traveller are more comfortable in asking others because they have one to exchange. Some folk are reserved or shy and may not feel at ease in asking.

Thanks Rob, both for your kind welcome and for your answer.

Out of interest, do Traveling Boxes count for the 100 club? It doesn't really matter either way - I'm just curious. I always assumed that they didn't, but a comment on this site recently suggested they did.

Yes,
All boxes count towards your 100 so don't worry that people will turn their noses up, in reality letterboxers are friendly people only to willing to help and give advice. We carry a Traveller which is registerd, but never thought to carry a book for other boxes personal stamps, what a good idea.

The only etiquette I am aware of is that you have to ask if they have a traveller, and make sure you have one to offer in return

Thanks for the advice everyone.

We've had our traveller made. Now we just need an opportunity to take "The Wandering Starr" wandering on the moor.
