Be careful out there!

I know most of you are more experienced and would always be sensible whilst up on the Moor but I just came accross this on the local BBC news site:

Always worth reminding folks that the Moor is a hostile environment, especially at this time of year.

Thank goodness for the rescue services, particularly the volunteers.

I agree, why on earth didn't they check the forcast before venturing out? Not just that they obviously sound inexperienced with the moors. Anyone who is experienced would know how to get back to their car in bad weather such as blanket fog and heavy rain.

It still amazes me why people treck into unknown territory without being prepared though instruction on navigating the moors.

Reminds me of something that we thought was quite silly last year,

We where sat on Barnhill car park in the fog (its so nice just to be on Dartmoor) chatting away and looking at the fog when we realised that the two cars parked next to us where empty, it had been thick fog in the area all morning and we where discussing the owners whereabouts, when to our amazement in front of us appeared out of the fog two ladies with three under tens each in tow, no map/compass visible, we where astounded that someone could take children out in that weather.

Do the locals have some in-built fog vision or is it just a local thing?

No, I wouild call it stupidity, to take little children out on the moors in bad weather and not be prepared for all conditions.

Personally I love walking in the fog on the moor - but then I am totally aware of how dangerous it can be....
Having said that - the last time I was out there in the fog I ended up 2 1/2 clicks away from where I thought I was.

But even so - there is no excuse to take children out there in those conditions.

As for the two who got lost - who knows what they were thinking - but I think we can safely assume that they will never set foot on the moor again without some training and a compass.
