Seems the powers that be are intending to dig up several aircraft sites under the heading 'Improving the moors' This is a copy of an email received today from paul Rendell, a very well know Dartmoor Historian. Please get your pens out and email your thoughts as requested. I feel another petition coming on :(

I have heard that the Duchy of

Cornwall has requested the removal of all debris associated with the

Aircraft crash site at Flat Tor Pan (which DNPA insists on calling Broad

Down) as part of the Mires Project. I would be most grateful if you

Could alert all letterboxers and others to this and ask them to urgently

Send emails to Dr Kevin Bishop at [email protected], and to

Tom Stratton of the Duchy of Cornwall at [email protected] ,

Requesting them to abandon this policy which is against all sound

Archaeological principles of leaving material in situ wherever possible.

Moreover, the debris has been present for nearly 50 years without

Causing a hazard and is a focus of great interest to Dartmoor walkers,

Letterboxers and explorers.

FASCINATING subject I would welcome ANY information, but like anybody else I think this sort of thing is left well alone.

We have tried to research any infomation on this particular crash site to no availe. Can somebody give some more interesting / accurate details (including a 6 or 8 Fig Grid ref ) please.

I was extremely lucky that the pilot of Sea Vixen FAW2 XN648 on that day, 31st May 1965, Sub-Lt Derek Cottrill saw my photo of his crater on Flickr and contacted me about it. He sent me a few photos and kindly allowed me to use them on my site. I am still in occasional contact with him, and recently exchanged emails about the proposed plans to dig out the two jet engines.

Like everyone else, I don't see the point - it will cause more harm than good. There is probably not much left anyway.
